During the week we had the Western Cars Stableford competition. The course looked magnificent and was complimented with an array of exquisite vehicles on show as competitors drove up Magnolia Avenue. The golf wasn’t too bad either. Alan Forsythe & Eamon Rasdale went head-to-head, with the former succeeding, but only just, on countback. Stan (Monty) Montgomery wasn’t far away either. One slip was all he needed, but that slip didn’t happen.

Aughnacloy GC hosted Clogher Valley in the first round (first leg) of the Conway Cup. This proved to be a titanic struggle with every match being a cliff hanger. Unfortunately for Clogher Valley, they came out the wrong side of the result and will find it very difficult to claw back the lead Aughnacloy established. However, the golf was good, the course was good, the food was good and the hospitality and camaraderie was excellent. Even Sydney was good. Congratulations to Dean Marshall and his merry men. A date for the return leg will be organised later.

Prize Giving is on Saturday 27th. Winner please note, “Local Rule”. Non attendance could mean forfeiture of your prize. Music & Entertainment by Country Willie Ralph.

Please note……….Time sheets are in operation for all competitions. Victor will oblige and can be contacted during office hours on 077 7595 2690.

Sheets are available also for “Singles”, “Doubles” & “Mixed Doubles”. The draw for these will be made at prize giving on Saturday evening so if you haven’t your name entered, please do so or, ring Victor.

Clogher Valley played host to Ballybofey / Stranolar Golf Club on Sunday in the Ulster 4 Ball. With splendid weather and the course looking magnificent, Eugene Rooney played out of his skin and kept Clogher Valley’s hopes up and carried them to a marvellous half on the eighteenth with a long putt. Stan Montgomery & Joe Davis won their match but the Donegal men were not to be denied. They won the next three and have put themselves in a commanding position for the return leg in Ballybofey next Sunday. They lead 3½ to 1½.

Please note……….Time sheets are now in operation because the course has become so busy. Members please get your name in for your favourite time, then you won’t be disappointed. Competition this week, sponsored by The Cooneen Group, is Stroke Play and a Golfer of the Year qualifier.

Lady Captain Mary’s Open Day

We had another very successful Lady Captain’s Open Day on Wednesday, 15th June when Lady Captain Mary Fee welcomed Club Ladies, visiting Lady Captains and Lady Golfers to C.V.G.C.

Refreshments were served in the Clubhouse on arrival giving guests and Club members an opportunity to catch up with one another and to view the beautiful prizes to be won. Prizes this year were kindly sponsored by Lady Captain Mary’s sons, Aaron and Stephen Fee, S A Fee Engineering, Tempo.

In a repeat of last year, weather conditions were wet in the morning for the Club Ladies’ groups but thankfully the afternoon brightened up and made for much more pleasant conditions. Some excellent scores were returned … but alas no-one managed a ‘hole in one’ on the third to win a lovely car – sponsored once again by Carzone Irvinestown. Lady Captain Mary extended her thanks to Gerry MacNamee for his continued support and generosity.

The day was rounded off with a finger buffet in the Clubhouse followed by the Prize Giving. In her speech Lady Captain Mary thanked Raymond & Violet for the fantastic condition of the course; Linda, Nadine and the Clubhouse staff for the delicious food served throughout the day; her sons for their sponsorship of the prizes; Victor for his dedicated help on the day and of course all the Lady Golfers who came along and made the day so enjoyable.

Lady Captain Mary received some beautiful flowers, cards and gifts on her special day. In lieu of gifts she asked that donations be given instead to I.C.U ward Craigavon Area Hospital.
